Jim has been a member of Boarding Australia and its forerunner, the National Association for Rural Student Accommodation (NARSA), since its establishment in July 1995. He has served as President of these two organisations for 14 years.

Prior to his retirement in 2013 his work in education included 22 years as Director of the Western Australian Government’s boarding service for country students following on from his work as Consultant for and Superintendent of provisions for gifted and talented public school students; specialist teacher of children with learning difficulties; founding Principal of Newman Primary School; and primary school teacher in country and metropolitan public schools.
