Indigenous Education and Boarding Australia is pleased to announce two masterclasses from the National Centre for Cultural Competence designed to support school staff and leaders from a range of diverse boarding contexts to develop their capability, capacity and resilience for culturally competent leadership.
The highly interactive masterclass workshops will support you to engage in intercultural settings actively, ethically, respectfully and successfully. The masterclasses help you to engage meaningfully with diverse cultures and deepen connections between leadership, cultural competence, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contexts.
These two and a half hour masterclasses can be attended separately but build on each other to help you develop your understanding of cultural competence.
Masterclass one: Tuesday 10 August 2021. 10am-12.30pm EST
Introduction to Cultural Competence: Knowing Self
A fundamental aspect of cultural competence is to know our own culture and how that impacts on interactions with people with cultures different to our own. In this workshop participants will explore their worldview, socialisation and biases and how these impacts on interactions with others. Participants will gain a foundational knowledge of cultural competence and gain practical experience and knowledge through activity-based sessions.
Masterclass two: Friday 3 September. 10am-12.30pm EST
Culturally Competent Leadership
Leading in a cross-cultural context requires leadership capabilities that include how to communicate confidently to ensure that people from diverse backgrounds can flourish. In this workshop, participants will explore core cultural competence capabilities which will enhance cultural competence, leadership and cross-cultural communication.

CULTURAL COMPETENCY WEBINARS
In the lead up to the masterclasses IEBA and the National Centre for Cultural Competence are presenting two webinars to stimulate your thinking regarding your own work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Presented as panel discussions you will hear a range of perspectives to regarding culturally competent communication and leadership.
The Webinars can be attended as stand-alone events or linked to your participation in the Masterclasses.
Webinar one: Thursday 13 May. 1pm-2pm EST
Communication can be tricky at any time but add a cultural element and many people find themselves in an uncertain space. This one hour panel discussion will explore a range of questions to provide you with some idea and how to improve your communication with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
What does effective communication look like from the different perspectives? Why are school staff often unsure of themselves when talking to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families? How do you deal with forms and written communication? Is it about the words, the tone, the place, the medium or is it about trust? Are you listening respectful? Are you saying ‘yes’ just so you don’t upset me? How do I handle silence?

Despite your best intentions it can be a challenge for any organisation, project, boarding residence or classroom to be led in culturally appropriate way. This panel discussion will unpack some of the challenges and put forward ideas on how you can demonstrate cultural leadership.
What does it take to lead in a culturally appropriate way? What are your strengths and where are the weak points in Are all staff aligned with the values of cultural competency? What do families and students see, hear, feel when they visit? And how do you know you are meeting the needs of students, their families and diverse communities they may be from?

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FROM TORRENS UNIVERSITY AUSTRALIA
IEBA has partnered with Torrens University Australia to offer their Short Courses programs FREE to IEBA members until December 31st 2020. These Short Courses are online, self-contained, self-paced learning modules of 1-2 hours duration. The course range includes People and Culture, Marketing, Management and Leadership, Business & Finance, Project Management and Design. Each course will come with a Certificate of Completion from the University, which can be useful in demonstrating continuing professional development.
