Our Commitment to Indigenous students

Indigenous Education & Boarding Australia has a long-standing commitment to supporting the delivery of high quality boarding services for Indigenous students. In particular, we have a strong interest in building the cultural competency of boarding staff in schools, improving parent and community engagement and in promoting restorative practice in boarding.

Indigenous Education & Boarding Australia also has a keen interest in policy issues that impact on Indigenous boarding students and services, including ABSTUDY and remote education policies.

Indigenous Education & Boarding Australia provides information and resources for Indigenous boarding providers.

Indigenous Advancement Strategy Project
Achieving Education Outcomes for Indigenous Students

The 2.5 year Indigenous Advancement Strategy Project (IAS) will further develop the capacity of the Remote Indigenous Parents’ Association (RIPA) to become an active voice in the lives of Indigenous students attending boarding school.

  • The project will equip parents of boarding school students to become engaged in their children’s schooling; this will be consistent with the National Standard for Boarding and promotes a greater connection between school, student, parent and community.
  • Tools will be developed to ensure that the National RIPA provides a model for the development of local RIPA branches in communities with students in boarding.
  • The project will embed Restorative Principles of Engagement (RPE) within the RIPA framework.
  • RPE resources – that are tailored to boarding – will be developed for boarding staff, parents and communities.
  • The project will continue to provide support to students parents and families in the following Roper Gulf communities, Barunga, Borroloola, Bulman, Jilkminggan, Manyallaluk, Minyerri, Numbulwar, Ngukurr, Urapunga, and Beswick.
  • The project will establish a National RIPA, as well as creating a framework for the development of additional RIPA branches.
